Tip! Research popular micro stock photography agencies online. There are quite a few of them, but you’ll want to start with just one or two until you get the hang of things.

Portrait is defined as, “A likeness of a person, especially one showing the face, that is created by a painter or photographer, for example.” In the area of portrait photography there are some guidelines that you should consider when you go to take photos of people.

The different types of portraits are: close-ups, facial shots, upper body shots or environmental portraits. Environmental portraits are where you focus on the subject and on their surroundings that provide more character to the subject.

Tip! For macro photography, you must shoot the subject as close as possible as the effective working distance. This is all about the right distance without disturbing the subject, if in case you are shooting small insects.

“Never have I found the limits of the photographic potential. Every horizon, upon being reached, reveals another beckoning in the distance. Always, I am on the threshold.” -W. Eugene Smith

The invention of the camera liberated painting from its reportage role. Gone was the need to produce a likeness, detail the events of the story, painting was free to express emotions. True what had gone before contained an emotional content but now painting could experiment and through imaginative interpretation allow the emotional content to predominate.

Tip! You must have skill in photography including the use of lenses, filters, lighting and related accessories.

Just recently, I was in my garden watching some birds that kept flying in and out. They seemed to be visiting a apple tree that had lots of fruit that was soft and ripe for eating. In and out they went and I thought I would get my camera to take a few shots.

I stood there for several minutes – the birds stopped coming – or, at least, seemed a bit wary of me. I was only able to get a few pictures of them as they were flying in and out. They hardly settled. It was all rather disappointing and I had nothing to show for my efforts.

Tip! Myth: I got a digital camera that takes great photos now I can start a career as a wedding photographer. Reality: Wedding photography requires that you have artistic talent and that you learn photography including composition, lighting, etc.

Have you heard of “red eye”? It is a term used to describe the red effect seen in the eyes of subjects when their picture is taken with a flashgun.

It happens because light from the flashgun travels through the front of the eye and is reflected off the back of the eye back onto the sensor of the camera. The back of the eye, being composed of lots of red tissue and blood vessels, reflects the light as red. Hence “red eye”.

Overexposure is a term often discussed in photography. What does it mean?

Simply put, it is when too much light is allowed to reach the sensor and the resulting image is too “light” or “bright”.

Why does it happen?

To get a decent image, the camera has to select a combination of aperture (the size of the hole in the lens that lets in light) and shutter speed (the length of time the sensor is exposed to the light when taking a picture).
